Spencer Tracy once said “I don’t want to go to heaven, I want to go to Claridges’s”
Over the past two weeks, the BBC have been showing a great little documentary about arguably one of the most famous hotels in Mayfair London – Claridge’s. It’s called Inside Claridge’s, you might just catch the show via iPlayer if you’re quick!
Claridge’s is a traditional ‘grand’ hotel, with long-standing connections to Royalty, that have led to it sometimes being referred to as an ‘extension to Buckingham Palace‘. One glance through the spinning doors and you know that this art-deco gem of a hotel is something rather special.
During September 2012, we were fortunate to have made three trips to the hotel, each for wedding filming assignments. Having previously photographed and filmed at many of London and Park Lane’s elegant 5-star hotels, this iconic venue was one of the few remaining spots that wasn’t pinned on our map. And just like a bus, we clocked up three visits there in one month – cool!
Every celebrity worth their A-list status has clicked their heels across Claridge’s chequerboard reception (Sarah Jessica Parker and Kate Moss are regulars), so it’s no surprise that Claridge’s is the top choice for celebrity & luxury weddings.
During our time there, the staff were all very accommodating and helpful. At one stage, we weren’t permitted to pull the camera-crane through the main foyer (quite understandable), so we indulged in plenty of fun carrying the 20ft ‘beast’ around the back streets of Mayfair – at one point halting the busy traffic in order to get the shots of the exterior needed.
It was a real pleasure to have filmed such wonderful events at Claridge’s and we’d jump at a chance to be back there to shoot more weddings! We were lucky enough to sample the a-maze-ing afternoon tea during a rare break, and the staff were kind enough to ask Gordon Ramsey’s top team to spoil us with some truly awesome food before we left. Yep, it doesn’t get any better for us event cinematographers!
If I was to sum up the hotel in one word – sumptuous!
We hope you enjoy looking through some of the ‘behind the scenes’ images we captured on our iPhones…
